VILLAGE OF SHEPHERD BRUSH PICK-UP POLICY

The Village of Shepherd’s brush program operates April through October. Brush pickup is on the first and third Thursdays of every month. The purpose of brush pick-up is for general trimming and storm refuse that the residents may have.

Placement and Pick-Up

Brush for scheduled pick-up must be to the roadside no later than 7:00 am on the scheduled day of pick-up. Brush shall not be placed within the right-of-way until five days prior to scheduled pick-up date.

Brush must be neatly piled with the butt ends of the branches facing the street in a pile no bigger than 15 feet long and 4 foot high one single row. Limbs can be no bigger than 6” in diameter. BRUSH ONLY – grass clippings, leaves, stumps, roots, weeds, vines, flowers, wire or other foreign materials are NOT permitted.

Village ordinance provides that brush placed at the roadside shall not obstruct Village sidewalks, right-of-way or view of traffic.

Brush pick-up is subject to inclement weather conditions, the volume of brush to be picked up and other obligations the Village crew may have. If brush scheduled for pick-up has not been picked up by 4:00 pm the following Thursday contact Public Works at 989-828-5062.

If a resident has more than the allowed amount of material they may contract with the village to chip the excess brush. This must be done prior to brush chipping day so the DPW can plan for the extra work. The village rate is $80.00 per hour. The Village will bill the resident for this service at the stated hourly rate after the service is provided. Prior to the Village providing this service, the resident must sign an agreement to pay the Village at the stated hourly rate.

Residents may obtain the agreement form Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Department of Public Works, 208 W Boulevard, Shepherd MI 48883.

Residents are encouraged to read and follow the guidelines as set forth above. Failure to comply with the guidelines and restrictions of the program will result in the property owner/resident being held responsible for removing brush from the public right-of-way in a timely manner.

If you have any questions or comments please contact the Department of Public Works at 989-828-5062, hours 7:00 am to 4:00 pm or the Village Clerk at 989-828-5278, hours 8:00 am – 4:30 pm.

People found in violation of this policy are subject to fines and costs associated with the clean-up and removal of the brush.

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR SEWER BACKS UP!

The Village of Shepherd does at time-to-time have sewer problems just like any other community. The Village of Shepherd is responsible for keeping all the Village mains clean and flowing. On occasion we do have back-ups do to the age of some of our mains and tree roots interfering. Residents are responsible for their sewer service lines from the house to the main including the tap. Roots and age can also cause problems with these lines. With this notice we are giving guidelines to help the residents in correcting the problem as soon as possible.

1.Notify DPW (Public Works) so they can determine if it is the Villages problem or a residential problem.
2. The Village will notify the resident if it is a Village problem or resident problem.
3. Village problems will be taken care of promptly and any property damage claims will be submitted to the Village’s insurance company.
4. Residential problems are the responsibility of the resident. Residents can clean themselves or hire a plumbing company to clean the service line.
